Although I still feel 25, my face tells a different story. Many years in the sun, at the beach and the ski slopes, has taken it's tole. I wouldn't change a minute of it. However, over the last decade I have struggled to apply my make up, especially around the eye area where my lids have become droopy and the skin around my eyes has become thinner and more crepe like. Then I had a light bulb moment. I don't know why it has never occurred to me before as Megan is a make up artist for NARS cosmetics. With an afternoon tea reservation today, (we are on a mission to try every afternoon tea venue within a 15 mile radius of Cardiff) I thought I would have Meg "do me over".
Although not overly keen on having close ups of my naked face, or for that matter my painted face, I thought there must be other mature women out there who may benefit from a little inside knowledge, so I am prepared to sacrifice my camera shyness. After consultation Meg and I agreed that we would go for a smoky afternoon look using browns. Meg prepared a face chart to show me the aim.
Meg started with my overall complexion, the aim to smooth out the imperfections (yes I have many, not only on my face) and diminish the pores. For this she used Nars Optimal Brightening Concentrate, an illuminating serum. It felt wonderful.
Eyes next to which she applied Nars Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base. The colours were again Nars, Madrague as an all over base, then a bit of Kalahari over the top to add some shimmer and then on the outer edge, the bridge and lower lash line, Coconut Grove. She lined the upper lash line with Nars Nuku Hiva Eyeliner Stylo, so easy to apply, and then finished off my eyes with Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara. The eyebrows were enhanced with a new product from Nars and one which I have waited years for someone to create, Eyebrow Gel in the light brown shade, Athens. On the suitcases underneath my eyes she applied YSL Touche Eclat.
I'm not keen on heavy make up. I actually don't like the feel of anything on my facial skin other than a very light moisturiser. Last year I splurged on a divine Dior serum/foundation in Ivory, so that's where we started. She contoured my cheek hollow in Nars Laguna Bronzer and finished the apple of my cheeks in Nars Orgasm Blush!
I loved the overall look, I felt made up without feeling like mutton dressed as lamb.
Without sounding like an advertisement for Nars, I love the feel of their products. The transfer of their powders is amazing. They are triple milled which means you only have to use the smallest amount to get the biggest colour impact. this makes them last longer and therefore more economical.
Megs Top Tips:
*Face: Prime the skin before foundation application. This helps to even the complexion. Some primers have added benefits such as SPF and pore refinement.
*Eyes: Always use a smudge proof eye shadow primer before applying powder eye shadows. This prolongs wear and prevents creasing.
*Brushes: Very important. Always use good quality natural hair brushes and a clean blending brush for both eyeshadow and foundation application.
*Lips: Always exfoliate and hydrate lips before applying a bold colour.
